Architect: Dhananjay Shinde

Ar. Dhananjay Shinde is one of India's finest Architects whose love for nature inspired him to design spaces that synchronize with nature's beauty. A graduate of the Academy of Architecture Mumbai, he started his own design studio in 1991. Within a short span of time, he made his mark and today has several awards in his repertoire including the IIID MK awards in 1999 and 2010, and more recently the JIIA award and the AICA award in 2014. Ar. Shinde firmly believes in and encourages young students and architects to emphasize on hand sketching besides computerized drafting. Below are the excerpts from my chat with him:-

How do you feel about winning this prestigious award?
We are elated to win this award as were pitted against the best in the business. It was overwhelming for us to stand out as the best coming from a small town like Nasik.

To whom do you owe your success to?
To my parents and teachers at Rachna Sansads Academy of Architecture.

How has your journey been so far in the field of Architecture & Interior Design?
We began our design journey in 1991 with interiors for commercial space & bungalows and then moved on to health care, commercial projects and even institutional spaces. Today the firm strives to produce work that is creative, practical and economical, keeping in mind the social environmental aesthetic issues relevant to each project.

What inspired you to create this design for "Design Studio" project?
After 20 years of practice in the city, it all started with an overwhelming feeling of the need to be away from the hustle and bustle, the concrete jungle, the noise and pollution, to be somewhere away in the lap of Mother Nature with fresh sunlight, crisp air, chirping of the birds surrounded by greenery and silence.  That’s how our studio took shape in the village of gowardhan around 15kms from the city.

What is your dream project?
The current Indian scenario has created the need to provide our future generation a hygienic and eco friendly environment. We are working towards it by developing more and more green economic and sustainable models for public toilets and public spaces like schools etc.

How many months does it take for you to experiment a particular design?
When a project comes up, there are a couple of things which we try to keep in mind. First comes the context where we are building. Every project and every client is different. Projects are as much about the people that inhabit them as they are about the program and the site. We try our best to understand what the client wants what his aspirations are and then we synthesize this with our logic and understanding of our projects providing long term and sensitized solutions. Time varies from project to project.

You are well renowned in the Architect fraternity. Can you tell us more about your career, as an architect?
After graduating from Academy of architecture I started practicing in Nasik, my home town as a first generation architect. It was a deliberate decision to start working in a small town where I felt the quality of life was better compared to a metro city. So even though the scale was less it gave us an opportunity to do all types of varied projects. In the early years we were mainly doing interiors for showrooms and residences. After winning the Dharmasthala   Manjunatheshwara Award in 1997 and J.I.I.A Award for Excellence in Public Architecture in 1998 our work gained recognition. Now we are doing a lot of healthcare & institutional buildings along with high end residences.

Apart from design, what are the other things that you like most?
Traveling and photography.

What will be your suggestions to young students of Architecture and Interior Design?
Now a days young students are more into computerized drafting due to which they lack developing skills. They should emphasize more on hand sketching. Comparatively in our profession the monetary gains are slow. Today’s youth should understand that Money is important but should not hold prime focus in a creative field.
