Basements are wonderful functional spaces that we often tend to ignore. While we struggle with limited space on the ground, the space below the ground (basement) screams out, to be put to some  good use. If you give a serious thought, you will realise that almost all rooms build on the ground can be mimicked on the basement floor – with lots of pros' and a bit of cons'.

Firstly, underground spaces are places of solace when the scorching summer  sun make it near impossible to stay inside the room without artificial cooling system.

Secondly, these can be extended versions of your living room, bedroom (or any other room) when the house is flooded with guests.

One of the most captivating plus points of having a basement place is that you can create a private place away from the noise and disturbance on the ground (or rather, becoming the disturbance for your neighbours)

Let's have a look at some of the design ideas, basements can be best used for.

Personal gym

Hitting a gym might be a mission we always fail to accomplish for one or the other reason. The best alternative then, for a work out (if we are really serious about it) is to have a gym at home. And what better place than basement can serve you that.

Basement gyms give you the privilege of working out in your own way. You are neither disturbed nor disturbing others while working out.

Wine Cellar

Sometimes it occurs to us that the sole purpose of creating a basement area was for those exotic wines. Indeed, if there is any better place for storing wine( or even making it), it is the basement area with no sunlight peeking in to distort its colour and flavour.

Living room

Living room is a room which can never be “ too big”. With expected or unexpected guests hopping in, it is the living room that gets flooded. Basement living rooms can be a real saviour at those times. Also, at times, we hesitate to furnish our living room in a way we like thinking that these are taboos that might not give an inviting look to the guests. With a basement living room, you are your own boss. Large projectors and screen, home theatres - you can create the space of your dreams.

Passion room

Ever had to listen to those endless complaints from neighbours for those loud music and noisy band practices? Well, if you are a passionate artist, these would have been a regular affair. (unless your neighbours are your die hard fans). One great idea to escape this routine scene is to shift your practice to the basement. With ample space and privacy, you are sure to get a better practice session. Plus, the options are plenty to give the perfect ambience and tons of drama.

For storage

Now, this one will be the first use we think of if are we blessed with a basement area. Well, these are indeed a blessing when you have loads of stuff that are not in regular use (which cannot be discarded all together) that need to be kept away, hidden from the sight.

These are just a few of ideas. The basements are, in real, an extended version of the house above. So, if you have used up all the possible 'vertically up' spaces, its time to think 'vertically down'.
