Small space apartments like those in suburbs of Mumbai and Pune are prone to spatial challenges. Most of the flats are either 1 BHKs or worse- one room kitchen flat. Within such circumstances, you cannot spare a room for a separate bedroom or an entertainment room. An absence of Pooja Room is quite understandable.

Pooja Room is a space that an Indian home cannot do without. We chant hymns to Gods everyday and our ways of worship make the entire atmosphere pristine and holy. According to Hindu mythology prayers to God everyday not only purify your soul but also the entire space around you. And hence, Pooja Area in no way can be an exception.

Well, setting a Mandir in Living Room is easy. Also, if you have Vastu concerns, let go of it because the ways we are going to share with you are in strong compliance with the Vastu principles.

Before we share anything, let's prepare the backdrop. No matter whatever your house layout is, you can always find a “Ishanya” or “North-East” corner. According to Vastu, this direction is ideal for Pooja Room. A Pooja Area in “Ishanya” brings prosperity, wealth and peace. Early morning sunrays fall directly on the Pooja Area and thus bring along positive energy.

Now once you have found the space, you have two options to set a Home Mandir there. There are two ways in which you can do this

1.  Creating a Pooja Niche:  Irrespective of whether your living room is rectangular, squared or L-shaped, you can easily create a small Pooja Niche in the North-Eastern corner. Fence it with wooden or marble partition and there you go- a mini Pooja Room is ready! Wooden dividers with ethnic style engravings can be easily found in the market. It's always good to place the idols in East-West direction. However, if that's not feasible, place idols in such a way that they face South. Avoid placing idols facing Northwards.

2.  Buy a Pooja Mandir for Home:  Another ideal option is to go for a Pooja Mandir. Pooja Mandirs are available in various assortment of shapes, sizes, materials and designs. The best thing about these Mandirs are that they can be incorporated anywhere. If you have enough space, you can buy a large Mandir and place it in North-East direction such that idols and portraits faces Southward.

In case your living area is jam-packed with furniture, the best option would be to go for Wall Pooja Mandirs or Wall Pooja Cabinets. Hang them in the North -East corner of your house.

However, if you are a strong Vastu supporter, here are few things you need to take care of despite living in small apartment.

Avoid Pooja Area under the stairs and avoid toilet near the Pooja Area if possible. If there is a toilet in North-East direction , it's better to equip a small Pooja Mandir in the North-Eastern corner of kitchen or open kitchen if you have one. A homemaker begins her day by entering into the kitchen and thus can spend some time meditating there.
