The idea of an Architects’ Awards event exclusively for Eastern India germinated on fine evening a couple of years ago, in an informal chat between Indian Institute of Architects WB Chapter and Multiwyn Group. The vision that both IIA WB Chapter and Multiwyn Group shared was that of motivating and encouraging the architects from Eastern India and documenting their work, which for long had remained unnoticed and hence unlauded.

The Awards programme was declared and entries were called for in two major categories – Architecture and Interior. There were 13 sub-categories under Architecture and 6 sub-categories under Interior. A unique feature of ADI Awards was the inclusion of students of Architecture from colleges in Eastern India. Both students and professionals submitted entries till April 9th 2016, after which 3 renowned architects were invited to adjudicate the professionals’ entries on April 23rd 2016. The jury comprised of:

The jury comprisedPadma Shri Ar. C.N.Raghavendran, Chennai        Ar. Samir Mathur, Delhi                  Ar. Dean D’Cruz, Goa

Once the professionals’ entries were adjudicated, a jury comprising of Ar. Gopa Sen, Ar. Debasish Pal and Ar. Anindya Karforma was brought together to adjudicate the students’ entries on April 29th 2016.

This exercise fruited into the IIA WB Chapter & Multiwyn ADI Awards 2016, on May 12th, when the Awards Night opened to full attendance at The Lalit Great Eastern. This was a novel event in the history of IIA, where almost all the eastern states of India participated, vying for the coveted trophy. The design of the Trophy in itself is a trendsetter, inspired from the terracotta pillars of Bishnupur temples, West Bengal.

Members of The IIA WB Chapter, its executive committee members, top government officials, heads of Multiwyn Group and eminent guests turned the Awards Night into an affaire exclusif. Six awards were given to students of Architecture from colleges in Eastern India, according to year of study.  Six winners and twelve commendations were announced in the Professionals’ Interior and Architecture category. Gen Next architects of Kolkata stole the show that evening.

A momentous day for IIA as it ushered in its centennial year on 12th May 2016, it was humbling to see all past Chapter Chairpersons of IIA WB Chapter sharing the stage with Chapter Chairpersons of Bihar, Ar. Vishnu Choudhary and of Orissa, Ar. Sagarendra Mohapatra. Five noted professionals and academicians in Architecture were accorded the Lifetime Achievement Award - Ar. Prabir Mitra, Prof. Jaydeb Sarkar, Ar. Biswa Datta from Assam, Ar. Kunja Behari Mohapatra from Orissa and Dr. Jitendra Singh from Bihar. Most heartening moment of the event was when 84 year old Ar. Debaprasad Moitra, an alumnus from the first batch of Architects who graduated from B.E. College, Kolkata in 1954, now known as IIEST Shibpur, shared some of his priceless memories with the audience.

Frank Lloyd Wright had said - “A doctor can bury his mistakes, but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines.” ADI AWARDS 2016 proved that works of architects from the East did not need to be hidden under vines, but were in wait of the spotlight.
