Moroccans do not hesitate to go with bright and warm colours with their interiors. Different shades of blue, red, pink and purple make it look warm and inviting. The walls, fabric for furniture, linen, everything gets its share of these vibrant colours, and surprisingly never seem to look over-done.

Moroccan Arches:

Another striking feature of Moroccan interiors is the horseshoe arch. These atches, also called the Moorish arches are the emblematic arches of Islamic architecture (and hence find a place in most of the Moroccan interiors). These are either rounded, pointed or lobed, giving a palatial touch to the typical Moroccan house.

Metal work:

Moroccans love their metal too. From mirrors to lanterns, vases to kettles, metal can be seen in generosity. And again, don’t except them to be pale and bland. Fine carvings and embellishment always occupy space, making them rich and regal looking.

Moroccan Riad:

As mentioned in the beginning of the article, one can relate Moroccan interior concept with that of India’s. Interior courtyards, which are one of the evergreen architectural concepts in India, is an unavoidable element in traditional Moroccan designing too. These houses with interior courtyards are called Riad which is Arabic translation of the word ‘garden’.

As is with any concept, this too has undergone drastic transformation in terms of structure and design with passing time. A traditional riad usually had a fountain surrounded by plants that helped in circulating cool air, while the modern versions have an indoor swimming pool, pond or play area.

In a country predominantly inhabited by Muslims, this inward courtyard gives the women freedom and privacy in their homes.
