A display of memoriesBy Sahana Rajagopal

Photographs are frozen memories. They remind us of a time that has gone by. They remind us of the happy and sad times. They remind us of who we are. They represent the people closest to our heart: family and friends. They bring back the moments that made our days or even broke our hearts. The photograph in scrutiny usually isn’t even a direct reference. We just tend to associate a part of our life with that particular picture. Hence isn’t it important that they are a part of your home’s décor? Shouldn’t they have a proper place of their own?
Many people face confusion while deciding what photographs to display, where to put them up and exactly how to make it look aesthetically appealing as well. Well here are some ideas which are interesting:
The best way to resolve a chaos is to categorize. Hence, decide on the categories of photographs that you want to display such as: Family, friends, pets, travel etc. There can be a variety of categories, a few can even be extremely bizarre such as: Rainy days! Choose the categories according to relevance, but ensure that there aren’t too many.
Next comes grouping, which involves gathering all the good photographs which belong to the particular category. However if there are a large number of them, choose the ones which mean the most to you.
Here is the tricky part, once you’ve sorted out the photographs and allotted categories, you have to plan on how to display them.
The frames of all photographs of a category could be of the same color, this will portray uniformity.
Choosing frames of two different colors will add more vibrancy and will also look more attractive. Another option Is varying the sizes of the frames as well.
The most important and the most difficult decision is choosing the display area. There are multitude of options available, some of them being:
Old is gold:-
Displaying photographs on a showcase has been the trend for the past many decades. Yet, this method hasn’t lost its charm. It gives a classic appeal and takes you back in time.
Wall of Pictures:-
Delegating an entire wall or sometimes a portion of a wall for family photographs is the latest trend. Here you can displaying the pictures of memorable times spent with your immediate as well as extended family. Photographs of weddings and birthdays are the most common here.
Up the stairs:-
In houses having two or more floors, aligning the pictures on the wall of the staircase is the best option. Firstly it’s rare that people adopt this method hence its unique. Secondly this wont clash with the theme in the rest of the house. You can adopt any style of décor and still get away with displaying plenty of photographs!
Out of the box:-
Let the arrangement do the talking. Creatively designing the outlook of the display, such as putting up photographs like a clock, is not only unique but is also self explanatory.
Photographs certainly do speak volumes and so do their display. Those with other ideas, feel free to drop in a comment!
