Back in 1997, a commerce student inspired by his love for playing around with various design elements entered into the domain of fabricating basic furniture pieces. But at that point of time, he had no idea that his 'business on the sidelines' would one day evolve into a venture he had scarcely dreamt of!

Viraj Mahajan, a guy for whom Interior Design was no more than a “jargon” founded Furniture Library almost unexpectedly. It was his experimentation, creativity and the eye for detail that motivated him to design aesthetic furniture pieces that bring together the charm of vintage and contemporary era. These finely crafted pieces are gifted with distinctive heirloom grandeur and are finally sold to a huge clientele of foreign diplomats and home connoisseurs with a keen perception of international design.

And now with a huge clientele spread across the world, Furniture Library based in Sultanpur, Gurgaon is a brand name to reckon with. We find out more behind the man and his vision; the brand and its mission.

Company history-How did it start?

I am a Delhi based boy and a B.Com graduate with no prior professional experience in interior/furniture design. It was during my time at our farmhouse in Mehrauli when we landed into a problem of sourcing furniture as the vendor had moved abroad. This encouraged me to analyze various design elements, which after a while had become an avocation that I loved. It was in 1997 I realized that this hobby can be turned into a business. And this led to the birth of Furniture Library.

Where did you get your inspirations from?

My pursuit of furniture design without a prior design experience might come as strange fact but honestly, I would say that the idea came naturally to me. Since both of my parents were avid furniture connoisseurs, our interiors were deliberately designed with the choicest and most tasteful furniture pieces and I was enthralled by their designs.

I gather inspirations mostly from the elements around me and try to incorporate their style in my own design. In the beginning I took up 16th century European style, but then I continued shifting gears and broadened my horizon. Anything appealing to eye is an inspiration for me.

What’s your mission and vision?

Furniture Library has an unlimited stock of furniture tailored to each client’s needs. We value our clients’ requirements and that too, without deviating from the current market trends. We work with myriad designs and since these days customers are looking for “less formal” pieces that could easily blend with existing classical furniture pieces, therefore we, at Furniture Library, take old-style design into account. And if you think, today’s market is 100% contemporary with all steel and chrome, you are wrong. Wood is eternal and it will always be.

After having designed for people associated with Oman Embassy, French Embassy and European Union, we are looking forward to expansion. I have received a couple of proposals from Dubai lately and at this point of time, I am thinking of taking up these.

What are the products?

Sofa, chaise lounge, occasional chairs, dining chairs, cabinets, bar cabinets, dining cabinets, beds, coffee tables, end tables, ottoman, mirrors, consoles, secretaries, desks, office tables, lamps etc.

What is your Product USP?

The Furniture Library brims with finely crafted furniture pieces which are made up of naturally seasoned wood. Also, a special attention is paid to detailing. Each product is subjected to proportion carving and inlay and finally goes through marquetry technique. As far as the production is concerned, everything is done ‘in-house’, right under my guidance and supervision. And not to mention, the product quality is of the highest standard (heirloom quality) and the furniture is also reasonable. We envisage on making the luxury approachable for our clients.
