Architect: Abin Chaudhuri

This week we interviewed Ar Abin Chaudhuri, the young and innovative architect from the eastern part of the country. His firm ADS was formed 8 years back, and now ranks amongst the top 42 Architectural firms in the world and has also received several accolades from the international and national bodies. ADS are the winners of the Asia Pacific International Property Awards in Public Service Architecture, IDF Awards and many.

How would you like to describe yourself?

We would describe ourselves as a creative mind, constantly in the process of exploration of new thoughts and ideas, new materials and technology, drawing inspiration from ordinary things. We essentially believe in extensive research, are open to what is happening worldwide and are extremely passionate about the work we do. Participating in a lot of international competitions, where there is no restraint of ideas and imagination, gives us ample scope for research and hence immense opportunity for improvisation. We can also ascertain where we stand on the global platform. Many of our recent projects have materialized through such competitions.

Also in last 4 years, the firm has won major educational, hospitality and Museum projects through national or international level competitions. Currently the firm is doing many major public and private buildings around the country.  Recently for some prestigious international projects ADS has collaborated with few international talent and design agencies.

Completed projects of ADS have earned them numerous accolades more than 37 international and national awards and many more have been published in several international and national magazines over a slim span of eight years.

What is your source of Inspiration?

We draw inspiration from small and big things, from things that surround us and ideas from across the globe. We appreciate design in every field and hope to grow with the collective growth of the world.

There are many masters who have made their mark in the world of architecture, playing their part with their contribution towards this art. We also want to make a difference by becoming a respected architectural design firm globally with an experimental edge. We aim to contribute to a universal dialect of “responsible architecture”.

And your Design Philosophy?

Our inherent design philosophy is to deal with every design problem at a fundamental level. We believe that a lasting experience is seldom about a first ‘wow’ and hence do not necessarily believe in a single ‘big idea’ approach. Our practice explores ways to engage the user, the way they move through spaces and interact with them. We like the fact that designing a space offers the opportunity to weave layers which unfold differently for different people.

Our vision is to constantly explore new paradigms in an inherent desire to push boundaries in Architecture and lead our firm to an international level in the near future.

What Defines your Style?

To be honest, I don’t have a signature element. Each project is unique with its own merits.

Tell us Something about your Most Favorite Project

I think, this is definitely IMI Kolkata. The bold  statement of  using  colour glass, as predominant feature in this  building  was  a big challenge, specially in Kolkata. This is first time that a public service building has achieved most international standards. This building inspired the architect community and sent out the message that “it can happen in Kolkata as well“.

Who/What Inspires you and your Works?

Genre of Projects you Undertake

We have worked on various projects in the fields of Public, Hospitality, Education, Residential and Commerce. Some of my favourite projects include: The International Management Institute (Bhubaneswar), Nazrul Museum, Praxair Housing (Orissa), our proposal for The School of Planning and Architecture (Bhopal), and a bamboo installation near my home.

What has been your Biggest Challenge so Far?

There are only challenges!!! Thrills are part of life, otherwise we cannot survive. Challenges are to keep up the good /authentic work every time while satisfying the client with respect. Others are – to establish ourselves as “MOST RESPONSIVE TO CHANGE“ – That is biggest challenge.

What Drives your Design Process?

It is the constant endeavour of ADS to set free built environment from the prevalent crustacean architecture and infill sustainability through a holistic approach of uniting architecture, interior, landscape, signage and product design.

We try to deliver every design at a very fundamental level.  What is important is that our work not only inspires amazement once, but innumerable times after that; maybe even for many years to come. Our aim is to approach every project with a new thought, its own unique design vocabulary. This is important because every project is unique, with its own unique location, context, requirements, and of course the end user. It seems easy when you say it aloud, but you have to understand the social aspect, the significance of the materials used, and the users’ response.
