CP Kukreja Awards for Design Excellence 2015, which was organised by Foundation for Design Excellence to encourage the role of Youth in imagining future cities, successfully completed its first cycle on the 26th of September at the Lalit Hotel in New Delhi, where the winners were felicitated. The pool of audience included Members of Parliament, Governors, Mayor of Delhi, Ambassadors, Architects and Designers hailing from across India and abroad.
Mr. Milind Goel of School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi presented a vision towards converting highways and road networks into sustainable urban public spaces of future and was declared the first winner, with a reward of Rs. 1 lac by Mr. Rajiv Shukla, Honourable Member of the Rajya Sabha and Chairman of the Indian Premier League. Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Former Minister of Environment, Government of India, felicitated the other winners.
The competition intends to provide a potential foundation for the winners to explore and enhance their design skills by encouraging them with opportunities of internships in global destinations like London, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Singapore. As a unique initiative, in terms of scale and magnitude, the competition fosters competitiveness and out-of-the-box thinking among young designers which helps in re-imagining urban futures.
Architect Dikshu C. Kukreja said,
“The Design Competition is aimed to motivate creativity in thinking, exploration of ideas and inventive design exercises for students of different design disciplines with respect to sustainable design principles and their applicability in envisioning future of cities.”
Future health of our cities needs attention as urban challenges like pollution, depleting and degrading natural resources, lack of civic awareness, and urban waste generation are on the rise. CP Kukreja Awards for Design Excellence attempts to look into such concerns by providing a platform for sharing, nurturing and showcasing truly innovative solutions imagined by young budding designers.
Covering the above mentioned urban challenges, the competition received entries that provided smart, ecology–efficient and economic solutions that can ensure a healthy development for our cities for future generations. The design entries varied from Ideas or Concepts which could be considered Design Models for spreading awareness or educating people on the ill-effects of unsustainable methods of development and methods of creating more sustainable and livable urban environments as well. Also, the entries belonged to diverse disciplines as Public Art, Interior Design, Urban Design, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Conservation and Public Health Engineering submitted by undergraduate students across India and abroad. From Left: Mrs. S.
