Rugs and Carpets are timeless accessories any homeowner would love to have. By adding warmth and colour, they bring the spaces together, giving a sense of  closeness. But just as any other piece of furniture or decor, these too tend to gather dust and dirt over time, no matter how carefully you step on them. And if you have a considerably good traffic at home, especially kids or/and pets, it looks like rugs are the only place they love to spill and soil. While a stern look can shoo them away at times, there definitely comes a day calling for a cleaning episode.

So now, you cannot procrastinate it any further. Just like any other piece of home decor, rugs too look good only when they are maintained properly. There are somethings which you need to do regularly like simple dusting or vacuum cleaning, and some that are done occasionally.

Here we share some basic and easy cleaning tips for rugs (designer or otherwise).

So, let's get started.

Routine affair

Whether its a rug, a carpet or a mat (Yes, they are all different!), regular dusting can save it from losing its shine to a certain extent. If you go for vacuum cleaning, do not forget to run your cleaner on both the side as a lot of dust settle down at the bottom (more than on  upper surface). If you don't have a vacuum cleaner, there are a dozen other ways to clean it up. Use simple broom (the one with natural fibre is better) to take out any food particle, paper or anything which is not mere dust. Roll the rug and flap to loosen the settled dust. A mere brush with soft bristles can do the rest of the cleaning.

Washing

While regular dusting may keep it dust free, dirt, blots or stains are inevitable in the long run. A good wash once in a while can bring the shine back.

A lot of us prefer to get them cleaned professionally, which is, no doubt, one of the safest ways, but a lot more expensive than when we do it at home. And it isn't quite a herculean task to do at home once you know how to do it correctly.

1. Rugs, as mentioned earlier, are different from carpets and so should be treated differently. The carpet shampoos we get in the market are usually manufactured for synthetic carpets and hence are a big no no for a rug made of natural fibres like wool or cotton. Either a rug shampoo (if available) or a mild dishwashing detergent will be good enough to dissolve the dirt while keeping the fibres intact.

2. Always read the instructions given on the bottle or/and go for a test. Try applying the detergent solution to a corner of the rug (keeping it away from the floor) and check whether it is bleeding colour. If is not, you are safe to proceed.

3. Loosen the dust by either running your broom or a brush before wetting the rug.

4. Pour the detergent solution bit by bit and brush gently with a soft bristled brush to take the water deep and dissolve all the dirt. Let it rest for a couple of minutes.

5. Rinse it with plenty of water, as many times till you find no dirt in the water flowing from it (Obviously, it cannot be crystal clear). Do not go for tumble drying, which can cause the fibres to come out. Clear off the excess water by using a squeegee or floor wiper. Dry it by laying it flat on the floor or hang it and let the cool air do it.

6.  To maintain the colour and shine of your rug, vinegar- your very own kitchen essential, can come handy. Mix one part of vinegar to three parts of water and apply it gently on the rug with a brush. Allow it to air dry. Do not put it under direct sun.

These, as you may have noticed, are easy and affordable tips. So, if it is time to get your rug cleaned, wait before you dial the professional cleaner's store. Your rugs will be more than happy to get a wash from their loving owners than a stranger.
