Islamic Interior Design Idea

Islamic interior designing is about blending art with function. The concept which has its root in the phenomenal structure of Al-Masjid-Al-Nabawi (the second mosque built in the history of Islam, is also a unique blend of designs and patterns of Roman, Byzantine, Persian, Indian and Chinese- regions which were conquered by the Muslims. This very universal blend of concepts make Islamic interiors a much replicated and celebrated form across the globe.

To admire Islamic interiors and their concept one needs to know the various elements that make a building truly Islamic. Here are a few of them that set apart Islamic architecture from the rest of the world.

Arched doorways

Arched doorways is the most striking and prominent element of Islamic architecture. The arches (also called the horseshoe arches) can be either round, lobed or pointed, each one adding a spacious feel to the interiors in its own way. These are often ornate with minute embellishments and patterns.

You will fall in love with the meticulously crafted tiles and stones when you enter an Islamic house. Islam culture, which considers depiction of animals and humans a forbidden act (Haram), is inclined to floral and geometric motifs. Intricate, colourful floral designs inspired from the western art (where Islam was established through conquest) are repeated and interlaced to create a visual treat.

Since furniture is usually kept low and subtle, these floral and geometric patterns are infinitely repeated on the walls, floors and ceilings which symbolizes the infinity God above.

A modern calligraphic inscription that serves a stunning wall decal Calligraphy is yet another important part of Islamic design. Muslims often like to decorate their walls with calligraphic inscriptions that are mainly quotations from the Holy Quran or poetries. While a quick look may make it appear just like an ordinary inscription to be read and reckoned, a closer view (or an Islamic architecture expert) can reveal that the proportions of the letters are governed by mathematics.

Lights

Light is believed to be the first creation of Almighty God in Islam and hence holds a significant place in the architecture & interiors. Keeping the furniture low, the artistically carved walls and facades let in ample amount of natural light which when piercing through the jalis and ornamental screens creates mesmerizing shadows that are hard to go unnoticed. This very presence of light inside the room is believed to create a sacred and powerful aura that is poured down by Allah.

Apart from these decorative and implicit features, Islamic architecture also follows certain rules that are passed on through generations, like a separate living space for men and women to ensure privacy and comfort.

Islamic architecture starts from the mosques and minarets and continuous to the private spaces. Each and every design and element in Islamic architecture has a religious aspect to it and this gives the reason why every Islamic home tries to reflect them in the humblest way possible.
