The White Fields, Chennai, Residential-Apartments
Low-Cost Housing for India’s growing Middle-Class is the need of the hour. Design Innovation in this category is absolutely necessary for the creation of a healthy society. Through this project we seek to create a project which uses architectural innovation to provide the same. The site was located on a fast-growing western suburb of Chennai, Ambattur. Being a Low-cost housing the Architect’s focus was on the creation of a project which offers the best living environment for the residents with-in the constraints. Also being a developer driven project, the maximum utilization of the buildable areas as per the Development Control Rules (1.5 FSI/FAR) was mandated. The focus was on the creation of a functional unit and a floor plate which offered the maximum scope for bringing in light and ventilation into the units without compromising on Privacy. The building was designed to respond to the site and context by integrating the Greenery around the site and views of the Ambattur Lake. The design detailing was kept minimal and used conventional low-cost techniques, yet through design innovation we were able to give a dignified and comfortable living for the residents. Social Green Spaces were provided in strategic locations in the project to allow for interaction among the different residents. The set-back spaces and parking were carefully designed with the above point in mind and additionally the terrace was provided with a terrace garden and a semi-open pavilion to give an additional open green area for the residents to enjoy.
