NAVI MUMBAI, Maharashtra, India-400614 To the Gills, Residential-Apartments
DWG, a surat based architectural firm approached us to design the facade for the Rushivan Apartments, Surat. We wanted to design a skin that is not mere curtain wall with no real purpose, but rather a skin that is passively responsive to weather. This would maintain the temperature of the building and in turn reduce the running cost of the building in the long run. It is common that once the habitants buy the apartment they tend to change the interior. It becomes difficult for both the owner and designer to convert the interior given by the builder as they cannot alter the building facade. So we had thought of designing a facade such that the builder needs to give the habitants only the floor plate and structural system. So irrespective of the changes made to the wall by the owner does not change the overall image of the building as envisioned by the builder. So how can today's digital tools, help design better facades that respond to the interior design and not just act as superficial skin? Nature is always efficient and there is always reasoning behind every design in nature. Taking inspiration from plants in hot humid climate and how their skin responds to harsh weather conditions, set of rules that results in such a dynamic skin was extracted. This research then we adapted to suit our clients design requirements. Based on the interior layout of the room, the generative facade can mould itself. The intensity and the angle of the skin can be re-generated based on how much protection the building wants from the heat. The facade creates a visual identity, character and expression of architecture for this residential project in Surat. The design would shape the environment around this township.
