Colombo, Sri Lanka Chamila Samarakkodi House 2, Nawala, Residential-Single family dwelling
This is a four- bedroom three storied house designed for a family of five. The house sits on a 9 perch land at a dead end of a residential neighborhood in Nawala. The foundations of the house have been constructed with extra effort for the compressible soil of this land with low bearing capacity.
The adjoining large empty land at the back and the nicely maintained garden of the land in front were the main determining factors for locating bedrooms at the designing stage. All bedrooms have been located in upper levels leaving more space for the Living, Dining and Pantry which open out to a bigger garden space. The first floor consists of three bedrooms, including the Master Bedroom, with attached bathrooms. The common study space with visual links to the living & dining area below is the main family hub of the house. The second floor facilitates a home theatre room, utility and a guest bedroom with a small living & dining area. This bedroom section can be used as a separate unit and has an external staircase from one side of the house.
All internal and external walls including external balustrades are entirely white painted while the marble & timber floors together with the furniture add subtle colour variation to the internal spaces. All external doors & windows are out of white powder coated aluminum. The floating steel & timber staircase acts as a main feature of the house and continues up to the top most level across the double height.
The furniture, light fittings and pantry unit of this house have been selected by the Client and the Architect on their visit to Thailand to bring down the most suitable items for the house under one theme.
This is the second house that the Architect designed for the same client and there was a request made at the initial stages by the client that the new house should be an entirely different one to the first. In contrast to the first house which had lots of colour variations and a very small garden, the new house has a bigger garden and white has been used as the only wall colour for the entire house.
The client with his good taste and sense for Architecture has become a supporting hand for the Architect for the improvement of the interior spaces and selecting items for the interior.
