Channa Horombuwa

Jayampathy Aluvihare house has been located on a sloping land at a prestigious location in Kandy. Overlooking the Historic Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, across the Kandy Lake, naturally this is any architects dream project. It was not at all an easy task following regulations laid by the authorities, and maintaining the serenity of the space. The panoramic view and the slope of the site become the primary generator for this project. I wanted to use the split-levels, containing the different spaces to respond to the natural contours of the site. We had a very clear understanding from the begging that we give this structure an almost sculpturesque form.

This four bedroom house provides undisturbed views of the Lake and Maligawa to every bedroom and the tall glass screen of the double height living room maintains the inside – outside relationship effectively. The interior and exterior of the house are almost entirely white. i deliberately chose the neutral palette to concentrate on the breathtaking views of the outside, without any possible disturbances that could have been created by wall panels and contrasting colours.

Aluvihare house with its sculptural unique form, grabs the attention of the neighbors and passers-by, while at the same time being an extremely comfortable and pleasurable home for the family due to the openness of its free flowing spaces.
