Bangalore, Karnataka, India-560102 The Kulkarni House, Residential-Single family dwelling
Project Status: CompletedLocated on the side of a hill, the site is blessed with a view to the valley on the west. The challenge was to get the view and the wind, but avoid the direct sun and rain. This provided an interesting context, which lead to a design with masses arranged at varying heights with large overhangs. The masses are so arranged to provide every space with a view. The large overhangs prevent direct sun allowing in the light and the ventilation. Along with the cantilever slabs and the differences in heights, the masses are so arranged so that, one block looks extruded from another perpendicular to it. Concrete is reduced by making it a load bearing structure, but beams are provided for the slabs to support the long overhangs. The exposed materials give a vernacular tinge to the contemporary styling.
