Apartment on Altamount Road, Residential-Apartments

Behind every residential project lies a story spun by a family that aspires to dwell in a house of their dreams. We as architects are responsible for their dreams to be translated into reality. The family of four for whom we created this quiet and comfortable home preferred a contemporary living style. To achieve the look we focused on simplicity, subtle sophistication, texture and clean lines, focusing on color, space, and shape to achieve a sleek and fresh look. Keeping in mind the clients requirements, we arrived at a most suitable layout which would utilize space to the fullest without compromising the quality of open space. The 2,500 square foot, 4 bedroom apartment was to be converted into a 3 bedroom apartment which enabled us to open up the living room to form a large square space flanked with a balcony on one side offering views of the city. The 3 bedrooms attached to one side of the square living room kept the private spaces huddled together.

As one enters the apartment into a long passage like vestibule, the living room lies to the left while the kitchen and utility area lies to the right tucked away at the end of the passage. The large square living room holds a seating area and a dining area. The seating area is located closer to the balcony flanked by two large wooden and glass sliding doors that open up the living space to the outdoors. The seating area holds tan leather sofas surrounding a set of wooden and black PU coated coffee and center tables. The balcony floor has dark wooden decking while the walls carry a pale yellow sandstone mosaic. Cane furniture and potted plants render a feeling of being outdoors. The dining area is set against a backdrop of an artistic marble panel with fluted white wooden cabinets holding the bar and crockery storage with a sweeping white ledge between the two tall structures. The dining table and chairs are made out of dark polished wood and burnt orange trims. Two crystal chandeliers hanging over the table add charm and sophistication.

A little square vestibule to one side of the living room leads to the study and powder room. The study is a simple space housing large comfortable black leather couches facing a wall that carries storage in the form of boxes of varied sizes arranged on the wall with a large television among them. One of the boxes extends out to form the study table which conceals the electronic equipment when kept shut. The walls of powder room are in a combination of walnut veneer and curved mirror arising from a black marble floor. The master bedroom suite has three specific areas.

The main bedroom, the walk-in-wardrobe and the master bathroom. The cream marble flooring of the living room continues into the bedroom which houses walnut wood furniture. Slender black powder coated shelves held together with steel tension cables form a pattern on the wall opposite the bed. A chenille cushioned chaise lounge sits near the bay window which has large glass panels which open onto lush foliage outside. The wardrobe and dressing area has walnut wood shutters and beige matte PU coated drawers stacked one above another forming a chest. The master bathroom floor is in beige marble with walnut veneer wall panels and punctuations of Armani Bronze marble forming the basin counter and shower area back drop. A large mirrored panel reflects light and adds volume.

The childrens bedrooms are playful and vibrant. The children being 5 and 8 years old required large open shelves and niches to store baskets and boxes carrying their books, toys and games. Keeping in mind their requirement the daughters room wall has shelves in the form of tables of varied sizes and colours stacked one upon the other forming a terraced table wall, while the sons wall has a bright orange spiral storage unit forming a booth within which he can recline and read. The cream marble floor and the walnut wood furniture continue in the bedrooms unifying the palette within the house. The kitchen and utility area are kept functional and carry white Corian surfaces on the platform and dado with beige tile flooring. Neutrals, black, and white are the main colors used to define the interior with accents of bright and bold color. The flooring used was a smooth cream marble that flowed through the house holding the palette together. With walls painted in a basic neutral colour, the client had a wonderful backdrop for bold colored art and accessories. The upholstered furniture carried neutral tones in textured natural fibers. The lighting around the house was a combination of indirect mellow light with ceiling spots to highlight art and wall surfaces.
