The spin is a boutique hotel, located in Anna Salai, Chennai. With easy connectivity to major locations within the city, the building site will appeal to both business and leisure travellers. The hotel encompasses 24 rooms, a banquet hall and a café. One of the earlier design challenges we encountered, was incorporating the existing column structures and floor slabs into the new design. Hence it was devised as a plug –in without altering the existing structure. With its strategic location, it is of major significance to design a dynamic façade that would serve as a major focal point. Located at Wallajah road perpendicular to Anna salai opposite the Multi-speciality Government hospital, the site is overpowered by towering buildings. The sandwiching of the building in the narrow plot between two buildings posed a challenge for the boutique hotel. With minimal frontage, the major challenge was to design the façade tocreate a prime focus to the building. An additional feature wall is also devised perpendicular to the front façade to generate a better view from mount road. The main building facade was modulated by pulling the opposite edges at different levels outward. The dynamism of the facade has a dual purpose - aself-shading mechanism and generating a focal point. The self-shading facade seamlessly blends into the adjacent feature wall by employing a similar language of interplay with frames. This feature wall, which bears the name of the commercial building, is visible fromAnnaSalai. To highlight the facade furthermore, it is treated with strip lighting at the edge which can be viewed from afar. This dynamic form allows a user to engage with the possibilities of three dimensional forms and its limitless variations. It changes in dramatic ways as one encounters it from different viewing locations.
